Almont

A person fly-fishes in the middle of a river flowing through a canyon in Almont, Colorado

Located between Gunnison and Crested Butte, where the tumbling waters of the Taylor and East rivers meet to form the Gunnison River, Almont is a scenic basecamp for outdoor recreation.

Things to Do in Almont

Almont is located at the mouth of the rocky Taylor Canyon, a hub of outdoor adventure. County Road 742 follows the Taylor River east to where it tops out at Taylor Park and Taylor Reservoir. Keep going east over Cottonwood Pass to experience one of Colorado’s most beloved scenic drives. Watch for moose as you go.

Colorado Fly-Fishing

The towering Collegiate Peaks form a picturesque frame for Taylor Reservoir and the headwaters of the Taylor River. Anglers, often guided, search for trout in every part of the Taylor, from the headwaters, to the lake, and down through the rushing waters in Taylor Canyon. Lodging in Almont makes for easy access to the nearby East and Gunnison rivers, too. Kokanee salmon return to this area to spawn in fall, a thrilling event for any fishing enthusiast.

Rafting, Mountain Biking & OHVing

Whitewater rafters and kayakers navigate the Class I-IV rapids on the Taylor River, with several outfitters operating in this area. Mountain bikers fly down rocky trails north of the river, including the rowdy famous downhill on Doctor Park.

Taylor Park is also a hotspot for OHVs. Miles of motorized trails and roads crisscross the Gunnison National Forest in this area.

The town of Almont itself is a tiny unincorporated community with a handful of homey restaurants, general stores and fly-fishing shops that will keep you fueled up and geared up for all your Gunnison Valley adventures.
